Strength and How To Obtain It

APOLLO CLASSICS

strength and how to obtain it book cover with Eugen sandow flexing his muscles

In this 1897 guide- and personal account book, Sandow recounts stories from his own life, and lays out the work he has done to help people achieve fitness, whether man, woman, child or even those with a physical hinderance. He speaks about his Methods, his own feats and most importantly, he lets us take a look at himself, the father of modern day body building.

One of the first books to popularise the idea of body building. Split in two parts: the first on rudimentary anatomy and training and the second on auto-biographical experiences as a show-man.

"Without strength—and by strength I mean health, vitality, and a general sense of physical well-being—life is but a gloomy business."

Summary of 'Strength and How To Obtain It'

Eugen Sandow is rightly considered the (grand)father of modern bodybuilding. He was also the first "natural" bodybuilder, not having access to the pills, powders, and injections that modern bodybuilders favor. Of course, Sandow was blessed with great genes. The book presents Sandow's philosophy of physical training; it is not an exercise manual, per se. Sandow's basic exercise method, detailing his exercise program, is the subject of another book. It is interesting to learn Sandow's concepts of exercise and diet, and compare them with our so-called modern views of the same.

There is a fantastic autobiography comprising the second half of this short book. Sandow is a very interesting character, as the first body builder in modern history basing his physique off of the Greek and Roman statues he found in European museums. Sandow is credited with creating the 'Grecian Ideal' a body type that has been idealized and pursued by proponents of fitness and aesthetics. The book in many ways is also interesting as a historical product of its time and gives insight into the origins of the modern fitness movement.

The Author

Eugen Sandow, the father of modern bodybuilding

Eugen Sandow's story begins in 1867 in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). Born as Friedrich Wilhelm Müller, Sandow was not destined for the world of bodybuilding from the start. His father wanted him to become a Lutheran minister, but fate had other plans. Young Eugen was captivated by the classical Greek and Roman sculptures, which later influenced his ideal body image. He wrote books, including 'strength and how to obtain it'.
