The myth of Eros and Psyche is a timeless tale of love, trust, and the trials that come with them. It is one of the most beautiful stories from Greek mythology, exploring the relationship between a mortal woman and a god.

Psyche, a princess of extraordinary beauty, was so adored by her people that they began to neglect the worship of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Jealous and angered by this, Aphrodite sent her son Eros, the god of desire, to make Psyche fall in love with a hideous creature. But when Eros saw Psyche, he was so struck by her beauty that he accidentally pricked himself with his own arrow, causing him to fall deeply in love with her.

Despite her beauty, Psyche was lonely and could not find a husband because men revered her too much to court her. Her parents, worried about her future, consulted an oracle, which foretold that Psyche was destined to marry a terrifying creature. Following the oracle's advice, they left her on a mountaintop, where she was carried away by a gentle wind to a magnificent palace. There, Eros visited her every night, but he insisted that she must never see his face. Though they lived in bliss, Psyche was curious and, urged on by her envious sisters, she broke her promise and looked upon Eros while he slept. Startled awake, Eros fled, leaving Psyche alone and heartbroken... Will they find each other again or will Aphrodite succeed in her twisted plans?

Edward Carpenter, known for his insights into love and spirituality, perfectly pens down the essence of this ancient myth while enriching it with his unique poetic voice. His take explores the depths of desire and the trials that true love must endure. A deeply moving and universal story that transcends time.

Perfect for lovers of mythology and classic literature, The Story of Eros & Psyche is a beautifully woven tale that speaks to the heart and soul, reminding us of the eternal nature of love and the transformative power it holds.

Edward Carpenter

Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was an English poet, socialist, and early advocate for LGBT rights. Born into a wealthy family in Brighton, Carpenter defied societal expectations by devoting his life to radical social reform and the exploration of alternative lifestyles. His studies at Cambridge, followed by a brief stint in the Anglican Church, left him disillusioned with traditional institutions, prompting him to seek out more progressive causes. Carpenter became a leading figure in the late 19th and early 20th-century socialist movement, influencing notable contemporaries like George Bernard Shaw and E. M. Forster. His commitment to living simply, close to nature, and his advocacy for workers' rights, gender equality, and environmentalism, positioned him as a visionary ahead of his time.

Carpenter is best known for his pioneering work in the struggle for LGBT rights. His book The Intermediate Sex (1908) was groundbreaking in its defense of homosexual love, which Carpenter saw as a natural and essential part of human diversity. His personal life was equally radical; Carpenter lived openly with his partner, George Merrill, challenging the societal norms of his era. Through his poetry, essays, and activism, Carpenter left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer who envisioned a future of greater freedom, equality, and acceptance for all people. His work continues to inspire social justice movements around the world.
