"Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier

Our Score: 4.8/5

Picture this: you’ve just married the man of your dreams and are moving into his sprawling, mysterious estate, only to find that his first wife’s presence is still very much alive in the mansion’s walls. Welcome to Manderley, the setting of Daphne du Maurier’s classic Gothic masterpiece. Our heroine (who we never learn the name of) is swept into a world of shadows and secrets as she tries to navigate her new life while dealing with the haunting memory of Rebecca.

Thoughts: Okay, so "Rebecca" is like the gold standard of haunted castle vibes. Du Maurier’s prose is so atmospheric that you can practically feel the chill of the sea breeze and the weight of the estate’s history. The tension between the characters is palpable, and the mystery of Rebecca’s life is endlessly fascinating.

Downsides: The pace is a bit slow, and some might find the buildup a tad too gradual, but trust me, it’s all part of the suspenseful charm. But, if you love classic literature with a haunting twist, this one is a must-read that will stay with you long after the last page.

"Dragonwyck" by Anya Seton

Our Score: 4.7/5

Imagine stepping into a grand, gothic estate on the banks of the Hudson River, filled with opulence, secrets, and a touch of danger. That’s the world of Anya Seton’s "Dragonwyck." Miranda Wells, our protagonist, is invited to live with her wealthy cousin Nicholas Van Ryn, and soon finds herself entangled in a web of dark family secrets and undeniable attraction.

Thoughts: Seton’s writing is lush and richly detailed, making the setting feel like another character in the story. The romance between Miranda and Nicholas is passionate and fraught with tension, perfect for those who enjoy a good mix of historical drama and gothic allure.

Downsides: The Gothic elements are pretty heavy, which might be a bit much for some readers. But, if you’re a fan of historical romances with a dark twist and brooding heroes, this one is absolutely worth the read!

"The Silent Waters" by Brittainy C. Cherry (Indie)

Our Score: 4.6/5

Indie alert! "The Silent Waters" by Brittainy C. Cherry is a gem that combines haunting elements with an emotionally charged love story. Maggie May Riley, after a traumatic event, finds herself retreating into the eerie isolation of a grand estate, where Brooks Griffin becomes her unexpected savior and love interest.

Thoughts: Cherry’s writing is emotionally intense and deeply moving. The estate itself is described in such a way that it feels almost like a character in its own right, adding a layer of melancholy beauty to the romance.

Downsides: The emotional depth might be a bit overwhelming for some, but it really makes for a powerful and immersive experience. But, if you’re looking for a hauntingly beautiful indie read with a lot of heart, this one is definitely worth adding to your TBR!

"The Haunting of Maddy Clare" by Simone St. James

Our Score: 4.5/5

Let’s travel back to post-World War I England with Simone St. James’ "The Haunting of Maddy Clare." Sarah Piper is recruited to help investigate the ghost of Maddy Clare, who’s been haunting a countryside manor. Along the way, she finds herself drawn to her employer, Alistair Gellis, and the mysteries they uncover together.

Thoughts: This book beautifully blends ghostly suspense with a developing romance. The atmosphere is absolutely chilling, and St. James does a fantastic job of weaving the supernatural with historical romance.

Downsides: The ghost story can get pretty intense, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But, if you’re into historical settings with a spooky edge and a swoon-worthy romance, you’ll definitely want to add this one to your shelf!

"The Lost Castle" by Kristy Cambron

Our Score: 4.4/5

In Kristy Cambron’s "The Lost Castle," you’ll find yourself enchanted by a crumbling French castle and a multi-generational love story. Spanning centuries, this book connects three women to the mysterious past of the castle, revealing a tapestry of romance, loss, and secrets.

Thoughts: The way Cambron interweaves the past and present is mesmerizing. The castle itself is described with such vivid detail that it practically comes alive, making for a spellbinding read.

Downsides: The multiple timelines might be a bit complex, but they add so much depth to the story. But, if you love rich, historical romances with a hint of the supernatural and a lot of heart, this one is a beautiful choice.

"Ashes on the Moor" by Sarah M. Eden

Our Score: 4.3/5

Sarah M. Eden’s "Ashes on the Moor" is a sweet and poignant romance set against the eerie backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. After a family tragedy, Evangeline Blake moves to a dilapidated manor and meets Dermot McCormick, a rugged Irishman who helps her uncover the mysteries of her new home.

Thoughts: Eden’s writing is warm and evocative, making the moors feel both haunting and beautiful. The romance is gentle and slow-burning, perfect for those who enjoy a more tender love story.

Downsides: The pace is quite slow, which might not be ideal if you’re looking for something fast-paced. But, if you’re a fan of historical romances with a touch of mystery and a deeply emotional story, this book will capture your heart.
