Weekly Reads 25-2024: Romantasy

WEEKLY READS: 6 book reviews and suggestions every week

This week's weekly reads are romantasy novels, or romantic fantasy. There isn't much more that needs to be said. Most of these books are rather well-known in the book communities, but to others, these might be their gateway into the genre. What to read? Well, now you know.

1. "A Court of Thorns and Roses" by Sarah J. Maas

Score: 4.2/5

This book reimagines the Beauty and the Beast tale in a richly woven fae world. The story follows Feyre, a huntress who is taken to a magical kingdom as punishment for killing a faerie. The book expertly blends romance, adventure, and political intrigue, with steamy scenes and a slow-burn romance that captivates. Maas’s lush descriptions and well-drawn characters make it a compelling read. Some may find the pacing uneven, but the overall experience is highly enjoyable.

2. "From Blood and Ash" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Score: 4/5

This novel introduces us to Poppy, a Maiden who must remain untouched and isolated until her Ascension. Her life changes when she meets Hawke, a guard with a mysterious past. The romance is intense and the plot thick with secrets, betrayal, and action. Armentrout’s storytelling is engaging, and the chemistry between the protagonists is electric. However, some readers might find the pacing a bit slow in the middle sections, but the thrilling climax makes up for it.

3. "Radiance" by Grace Draven

Score: 4.1/5

Radiance" is a beautifully written tale of a marriage of convenience between two beings from different races. Brishen, a Kai prince, and Ildiko, a human noblewoman, develop a profound bond that transcends physical appearances. The romance is heartwarming, filled with mutual respect and growing affection. Draven's world-building is immersive, and the book is a refreshing take on interspecies romance. Some might wish for more action, but the emotional depth is incredibly satisfying.

4. "The Bird and the Sword" by Amy Harmon

Score: 3.8/5

Set in a world where magic is forbidden, this story follows Lark, a mute girl with hidden powers, and King Tiras, who seeks to protect his kingdom from invaders. Their romance blooms amidst danger and political intrigue. Harmon's lyrical prose and vivid imagery create an enchanting narrative, though the plot twists are somewhat predictable. The emotional depth and character development are commendable, but some may feel the pacing is slow at times.

5. "Serpent & Dove" by Shelby Mahurin

Score: 4/5

In a world where witches are hunted, Louise, a witch, and Reid, a witch-hunter, are forced into a reluctant marriage. Their relationship evolves from animosity to deep affection. Mahurin deftly balances romance, magic, and action, with witty dialogue and well-paced plot. The tension between Lou and Reid adds spice to the story, making it a page-turner. However, some readers might find certain plot elements predictable and the world-building needing more depth.

6. "Kingdom of the Wicked" by Kerri Maniscalco

Score: 3.5/5

This dark fantasy romance follows Emilia, a witch seeking vengeance for her sister's murder, and Wrath, a prince of Hell. Their unlikely alliance is fraught with mistrust and attraction. Maniscalco's atmospheric writing and the Gothic setting are captivating, but the romance can feel rushed and the plot a bit convoluted. Despite these flaws, the book offers a tantalizing mix of mystery and magic, though some might wish for more developed character arcs.
