What are dumbbells?

There's tons of types of workout equipment used in workouts nowadays, ranging from smaller items like dumbbells to bigger items like barbells and machines. Even though the image people get with working out is often the bar with the plates on it, dumbbells are the best way to target specific muscles instead of multiple muscles at once. Body-weight exercises like planks and pull ups are a great start for working out, but to really get into muscle building, a pair of dumbbells is highly recommended. Get some of your own or use the ones at the local gym and get started with working out.

What weight should I start with?

If you're new to dumbbells, or weights in general, start with no dumbbells at all - you can still get a burn without dumbbell. It’s all about getting the hang of the movements first. Once you’re comfortable, it’s time to pick up some weights. Once you got the feeling of the exercise down, get dumbbells ranging from 1, 2, or even 5 kilograms. These will likely be enough to make you feel a change. If these feel too light for you, you can go heavier in your next workout or as you get more comfortable.

Generally, if you can complete multiple sets of the amount of reps you're using with full motion, it's a sign you can scale up and go heavier. If you can't complete a set, it might be too heavy and you can either scale down or go with lower reps until you can complete the normal amount.

Proper form

Let’s talk about form – it’s the cornerstone of all weight training, dumbbells included. Starting off with bad form is like building a house on a shaky foundation. Sure, you might progress, but it's risky and far from ideal. Bad form doesn't just reduce the effectiveness of your workouts; it’s a one-way ticket to injury town.

So, what’s the deal with good form? It’s about nailing the technique, ensuring each movement maximizes muscle engagement and minimizes the risk of injuries. If you’re ever in doubt, lower the weights or ditch them altogether. Practice the movement until it feels like second nature. Remember, it’s not just about lifting; it’s about lifting right.

And here's a pro tip: Don't be shy to ask for advice. Whether it's a trainer at the gym or a tutorial video, getting your form spot-on is worth that extra effort. Once you have the right form, every rep counts towards your gains, minus the pains.

Some pointers when working out with dumbbells

Dumbbell training isn't just about picking up the heaviest weights you can find. It's a balancing act – pushing your limits while keeping it safe. Here are some pointers to keep you on the right track:

1. Using Adjustable Dumbbells

If you're serious about your home gym, consider investing in adjustable dumbbells. They're the Swiss Army knives of the weightlifting world. With the twist of a dial, you can adjust the weight to suit different exercises and strength levels. Yes, they might pinch your wallet more than fixed-weight dumbbells, but think of them as a long-term investment in your fitness journey.

2. Don’t Rush the Weight Progression

It's tempting to jump to heavier weights, but patience is key. Going too heavy too soon is like trying to sprint before you can walk – it won’t end well. If you find yourself compromising form for heavier weights, it's a clear sign to scale back. Progressing gradually not only builds strength more effectively but also keeps those nasty injuries at bay.

3. Listen to Your Body

This can’t be stressed enough. Every body is different, and what works for someone else might not work for you. Soreness after a workout? Normal. Sharp pain during an exercise? Red flag. Tuning into your body’s signals is crucial. It's the best coach you'll ever have.
